the international reponse to katrina:
"[Bush] said the United States could take care of itself and did not expect to tap contributions from foreign countries." Well, whatever, Canada was offering whatever assistance it could provide and had their shit together by Wednesday, apparently beating our own federal government. Meanwhile:
The State Department said offers so far had come from Canada, Russia, Japan, France, Germany, Britain, China, Australia, Jamaica, Honduras, Venezuela, the Organization of American States, NATO, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, South Korea, Israel and the United Arab Emirates.
Assistance ranged from medical teams, boats, aircraft, tents, blankets, generators and cash donations.
We're honestly going to need it. The casualty estimates are going to rise dramatically in the next weeks because a significant fraction of the 250,000 that couldn't afford, and for whom there was no mobilized evacuation effort, to get out of New Orleans were probably killed, and the rest have gone for days now without food and water and there's few signs of relief yet, that and Americans are shooting at eachother like it's Lord of the Flies. Some 20,000 at the Superdome are slowly being evacuated to safety by bus (it's thursday night and there's still a huge number left, they don't have food or water, why?). That's without considering the rest of the region that was levelled by the hurricaine. The nation's second largest port has been wiped out, over 20 oil rigs have been sunk, good portions of our oil production and refining capacity shut down if not destroyed, and on and on. For those of us who weren't paying attention the impact of losing, more or less, the entirety of a major American city takes a little time sinking in.
Most everybody else, apparently, have sent get-well soon cards. Except for North Korea and those "anti-war leftists" of the Westboro Baptist church.
