Bush - the Megatron of class warfare..., 2003-05-28 15:56:33 | Main | The Roadmap, aka "The Vision"..., 2003-06-04 12:05:51

in the cable news today:

Lacey Peterson; the seven year hunt for a domestic anti-gay, anti-abortion, and anti-olympics terrorist; Lacey Peterson; update on the Moussaoui trial; Lacey Peterson; the "vision", the "moral vision", and the "road map" of the "visionary" Mr. Bush; Lacey Peterson; the guilty verdict in the Detroit conspiracy trial; Lacey Peterson; Martha Stewart; Lacey Peterson; occasional blips about how surprised we all are that we didn't find any WMD in Iraq; Lacey Peterson; Lacey Peterson; and finally, at long last, full coverage of the week-old story about a two-headed turtle in Albany (not the one just found in South Africa. That 25 other species of turtle are threatened to be just as rare in the near future would probably make a better headline than either of the two).

What isn't there: Across much of Iraq, the sense of desperation that has grown during the weeks of U.S. occupation is reaching crisis proportions; Bremer scraps the national conference for a US appointed authority while Iraqis demand self-rule, but "We haven't delayed anything"; the malnutrition rate among Iraqi children has risen 3.3 percent since the war began, and in general chaos continues unabaited, reversing pre-war trends.

What isn't there: a month after Rumsfeld declared major combat operations over in Afghanistan the US mounts a major operation and amid claims that the US will reduce its presence in Afghanistan a division of US troops are deployed; a helicopter crashes, fuel trucks are ambushed; two US bases and a German aid organization are attacked; Osama and Omar are claimed to be back in the country; political speech under attack; middle class under attack; US-backed warlordism continues; "Afghanistan is reverting to lawlessness" but Kabul looks "better". Needless to say, Bush's promised Marshall Plan has not materialized. But oh, that "remarkable" military campaign. Fuck you, Frontpage.

What barely arrived just in time to be too little, too late: the FCC vote for a new American matrix. What else is there.

Now back to your regularly scheduled Lacey Peterson - unless you're Chris Matthews, in which case you will continue an endless crusade of "is the media liberal?" bits with right-wing and "liberal" establishment hacks on a weekly basis. As though the real problem is the bias for social liberation found among institutions that spend all their time navel-gazing from within the confines of their own rectums.
