World War III:
With the French predicting "negligible impact" on a war that has killed almost 5 million people since 1998 it's worth mentioning - in consideration of the fact that the US continues its habit of threatening to veto peacekeeping missions "one by one" if it doesn't get special immunities, as it did last year on Bosnia - how much of a cash cow the African world war has been for US military firms.
For my libertarian readers who don't care much for France and dislike such peace-keeping interventions, I direct you to the cease fire they helped secure late last month amid the civil war in the Ivory Coast. They're there, by their own admission, to secure their business interests - in the sense that war is bad for business, their role in shoring up Laurent Gbagbo's corrupt government is muddled, and nobody at all is terribly interested in doing anything about a massive cocoa industry that's farmed by enslaved children, but I would emphasize the decreasing rates of senseless atrocity that haven't themselves involved senseless atrocity.
The paternalistic cheese-eating surrender monkeys also just rescued 500 Americans and Europeans in Monrovia, Liberia, another African country that has recently descended back into chaos amid Africa's world war. Nobody appears interested in rescuing the Liberians, on the other hand. Maybe if we sent our troops to Ghana for training we'd be in a position to help out, were we to ever express an interest in contributing to something productive rather than justifying our atrocities by acting surprised about atrocities we contributed to.
