within prayer distance of striking hopeful:
So Obama and Clinton are passing on the June 3rd NH debate ("they will only participate in Democratic National Committee-sanctioned debates", like, uh, that one they just participated in?), and the first guy to actually announce, Mike Gravel, hasn't been invited. This will all come as a stinging disappointment to editorial page editor for debate co-host Union Leader, Andrew Cline,:
Throughout, I kept longing for one of two different scenarios. Either Dennis Kucinich and Mike Gravel disappeared, leaving the floor to candidates who actually have a prayer of at least getting on the ticket, or everyone else disappeared, leaving the floor to a snapping dachshund and an overexcited but defanged pit bull. I’d pay money to see that spectacle.
Sounds like a fund raising opportunity to me.
Everybody below third place (or fourth, when the refusenik Al Gore is included) is within the margin of error. If prayer-distance is any sort of objective measure the NH debate would consist of John Edwards holding a solo press conference.
The Union Leader claims it invited "every Democratic hopeful", so here's a petition you can sign to put the dude within striking distance of that category.
update: to put it another way, "the question is whether any competitive candidate for the Democratic nomination is any different". Probably, but they can't tell you about it. Shhh.
update: Charles Perkins of the Union Leader says Gravel is in.
