'we don't have a policy of torture':
is the mantra from Congressional Republicans, which begs the question why
general counsel of the Navy Alberto Mora would tell top Pentagon officials
"use of coercive techniques ... has military, legal, and political implication ... has international implication ... and exposes us to liability and criminal prosecution." Or why all those policy documents from Rumsfeld, Gonzales, etc., OKed policies involving torture. It's swell that the men and boys at GITMO are being fed lemon infused fish, but fixing your neighbor's roof doesn't get you off the hook for chaining him up in his basement and torturing him.
Closing GITMO down isn't going to work because we've got, reportedly, tens of thousands of people detained around the world and a small fraction of them are held at GITMO, where their treatment is probably and sadly better than they get elsewhere. To fix this we need criminal prosecution of those who signed off on the policies, independent oversight of renditions and the detention facilities, and some due process so innocent bystanders aren't rotting in cages so long that they have good reason to go the unlawful combatant route once they get out.
On the other hand we should give Guantanamo Bay back to Cuba, but whatever.
