Two weeks ago or so it was reported in Yet Another Study that the artificial sweetener aspamarte - the second highest selling artificial sweetener in the world - was found to be "a potential cancer-causing agent to humans even at levels that are less than half of what is considered safe by the U.S. government". This stuff has been on the market for over two decades and is still being tested on rats. You'd think there'd be some semi-rigorous human trials by now. And more study on the natural alternative, still blocked by the FDA for lack of study. Scanning the life sciences search engine what is most curious is that there doesn't appear to be one study done on it by American researchers. The obvious thing to do in this day and age, I suppose, is blame Donald Rumsfeld.
