the deficit, solved!:
The CBO projects deficits of about half a trillion from 2012 to 2020, a little under 3% of GDP a year. Simply allowing medicare to negotiate drug prices, like Obama pledged during the campaign, we could cut non-discretionary spending by some $30 billion a year. With almost inconsequential, extremely conservative defense cuts we could reduce discretionary spending by $100 billion a year. Implementing a likewise inconsequential and conservative austerity program for the incredibly wealthy could pretty easily reduce deficits by another $450 billion a year.
Well, now I'm $80 billion a year in the black, I'm a genius! I haven't even imposed some radical single-payer healthcare program that would bring us more in line with international norms, say, only spending half as much per capita as everybody else, rather than double, that'd probably save a few hundred billion a year more in medicare and medicaid spending.
But whatever, why do something radical when you can do Warren Buffet and his ilk a favor without letting them steal your retirement.
