Pope Buchanan:
We're going to hear days and maybe even weeks of vicious attacks and whining from the liberal-left about how Benedict XVI isn't a feminist, a gay liberationist, a liberation theologist, etc. ad nauseum.
All of which is true, by the way, and worth whining about if you care. He's a political, economic, religious, and social conservative, but he's anti-war (and pro-child molestation?). In paleological terms that makes him a Conservasaurus Rex, and an authoritarian, fundamentalist one at that. Kind of a Pat Buchanan, only less of a populist, if you can imagine it.
It's not that important to non-Catholic Americans, seems to me, unless maybe you're trying to remove that pro-war plank from the eyes of your Catholic pals, and in my experience that only serves as a meaningless kick in the shins that doesn't get you anywhere and, as an argument from authority, isn't valid anyway. On the other hand it is a major setback for much of the developing world, but since most American Catholics don't follow the dictates of the Papacy it shouldn't impact American policy in any way, foreign or otherwise, which is why it would matter, I would imagine, to Americans on any level outside celebrity.
update: my mistake, this is terrific.
