is that a threat or a guarantee?:
Saudi Arabia has told the Bush administration that it might provide financial backing to Iraqi Sunnis in any war against Iraq’s Shiites if the United States pulls its troops out of Iraq
Apparently the joint PR teams between the Administration and the Saudis have determined that the next stage of disintegration that we must remain in Iraq to prevent is the Sunnis finally getting significant assistance from somewhere besides Bush's incompetence.
But room and board for 2-3 million refugees ain't cheap, so I'm glad to hear the Saudis are finally considering offering some assistance for, say, Sunni refs on the contingency that we leave. If we left, likewise, it would be less politically embarassing to acknowledge the refugee crisis, instead of trying to paper it over.
How one gets from financial assistance to buying bicycles I don't exactly follow. The Saudi guarantee isn't a threat of a regional war, but it might give the Sunnis a chance if Iranian proxies in Iraq take Cheney's advice and persue the 20 percent dissolution. And we're just going to keep saying it, I think: standing in the way of some scant possibility of rapprochement in Iraq isn't helping.
