georgia:
undergoing some interesting developments. Ballot stuffing disputes (not to be confused with those of Georgia, USA) have resulted in the ousted president's being surprised by the sharp criticism from the West, which, in fact, was somewhat surprising. A CNN talking head described the opposition as "pro-west" as the sitting official, so whoever is in power doesn't matter so much to US policy makers so long as somebody remains in power - versus aplomb at the "victory for democracy" of the Venezuelan coup. So far as I can I cannot tell what, if any, difference there is between the parties that won or lost the highly corrupt elections (this sort of context is apparently unnewsworthy). Two different groups of clients for Georgia's cliques of robber barons, I suppose - maybe even something similar to what we have here. 'Course the Georgians apparently have the balls to do something about rigged elections, we can't even get Jimmy Carter to monitor ours. Unpleasantness is expected.
update: Shevardnadze steps down: "you don't have to do it as kleptocratically as Shevardnadze. But that is the cultural expectation".
