From the US Army, Strategic Studies Institute, a report on the
origins of various radical fundementalist groups, such as Hamas and
Gush Emunim
(never heard of them before), that I found
enlightening, assuming it's true, as it seems to run counter to just about everything I hear among the
chattering classes (say, the fact that after 1967 Jordan actually did try to absorb the exiled Palestinian
population - usually this is described as 'neighboring Arab states never lifted a finger
to help'):
"The Palestinians had expected the Israelis to abide by international law, which
forbade such activity, and thus were content to allow the United
Nations to address the wrongs done to them. The creation of
Kiryat Arba
raised the specter of a complete Zionist takeover of Palestinian lands."
