    From the Dept. of Forgetting Afghanistan:

    it's a mess, roughly big enough that we can't afford to fix it and be in Iraq at the same time, but not so big that it would require everything we've spent on Iraq already - oh, and a policy would be nice too.

    As one of the more absurd turns for the worse the overlord of Herat, in western Afghanistan, Ismail Khan has apparently re-created the Taliban-era Department of Vice and Virtue, and has started banning literature societies and professional associations, censoring media, enforcing reactionary interpretations of Islamic law, perpetrating violence against women and, in general, beating the shit out of people. About the same Ismail Khan our young swashbuckling do-gooder Donald Rumsfeld is quoted as saying on April 29th, 2002, that he is "an appealing person, thoughtful, measured, and self-confident." Etc.

    But how about that highway.
